Get to know your car. Before you start any DIY car maintenance, familiarize yourself with your car’s owner’s manual. It will tell you everything you need to know about your car, including what type of oil and filters are required for basic maintenance.

Change your oil. This is the most important part of regular car maintenance. Depending on your car and how frequently you drive it, you should change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Check the owner’s manual for the recommended intervals.

Replace your air filter. An air filter helps keep dust and dirt out of your engine, so it’s important to replace it regularly. Depending on the type of filter you have and how much you drive, you should replace it every 15,000 to 30,000 miles.

Check your brakes. Brake pads should last at least 25,000 miles, but it’s important to check them regularly for wear and tear. If they’re getting low, it’s time to replace them.

Inspect your tires. Check the tread depth of your tires every month to make sure they’re still safe to drive on. If they’re too worn, it’s time to get new tires.

Top up your fluids. Check all your vehicle’s fluids regularly, including oil, coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Make sure they’re all at the right levels.

Clean your car. Keeping your car clean inside and out not only makes it look better, it can also help extend its life. Use a car-specific cleaner and a microfiber cloth to clean your car’s exterior and interior.

These are just a few basic car maintenance tips for beginners. If you’re feeling brave, there are plenty of other maintenance tasks you can do yourself.

Just make sure to read up on the job before you start and have the right tools and supplies on hand. Happy wrenching!
